Prepare yourself for intensive listening during the 2018 Gilmore Keyboard Festival! Through scores of selected works from the Festival, learn to hear and recognize basic music theory concepts, in harmony and form, to elevate your listening abilities and deepen your aural comprehension. This class is for any level listener. No background in music theory is required.

In January 1941, Olivier Messiaen, while imprisoned in Stalag VIII-A, a WWII prisoner-of-war camp, composed and premiered Quatuor pour la fin du temps (Quartet for the End of Time). Two years later, at the Theresienstadt concentration camp, Austrian composer, conductor and pianist Viktor Ullmann set Rainer Maria Rilke’s Die Weise Von Liebe und Tod Des Cornets Christoph Rilke (The Love and Death of Cornet Christopher Rilke) to music, for piano and narrator.

Both works, one now famous and the other almost lost, exemplify the human will to live and create, even in the harshest and most dire conditions.

Sunday, April 29, Daniil Trifonov

Pianist-composer Daniil Trifonov will present a concert featuring one significant work from each decade of the 20th century. Trifonov chose the pieces, seminal for each decade, because of what he calls the novelty of their language. Using a metaphor from filmmaking, he describes the program as a kind of “time lapse,” a musical journey through the last century of piano writing.

This course sets each piece in context and prepares us to explore the perspective of this master pianist.
