Gilmore Artist Awards

Established in 1989 to honor the legacy of Irving S. Gilmore, the Gilmore Artist Awards recognize extraordinary piano artistry and provide some of the most generous financial support in the musical arts. Mr. Gilmore was a multifaceted individual—a merchant, arts patron, concert-quality pianist, business leader, and military veteran—who found his greatest joy in supporting the arts. He championed gifted individuals, helping them share their unique talents.
Gilmore Artist Award
Presented every four years to a classical pianist of any age or nationality, the Gilmore Artist Award provides $300,000 to support the artist’s creative and professional development. Often described as music’s answer to the MacArthur “genius grants,” the award is non-competitive. Pianists are recommended by the Classical Awards Nominating Committee, a diverse group of international music professionals. Final decisions are made by an anonymous Classical Awards Advisory Committee, which evaluates nominees over time by observing multiple performances in varying conditions.
Gilmore Young Artist Award
Also presented every four years, the Gilmore Young Artist Award recognizes two promising pianists aged 24 and younger. Each Young Artist receives a $25,000 award to support their artistic and educational development. Nominations are submitted by music professionals worldwide, and an anonymous committee evaluates the candidates over time.
Selection Process
In both awards, candidates are first recommended by the Classical Awards Nominating Committee and then evaluated by the Classical Awards Artistic Advisory Committee, which makes the final selections. At every stage, candidates remain unaware they are under consideration, ensuring a fair and unbiased process.
