Alexandre Kantorow, 2024 Gilmore Artist, Recital
Alexandre Kantorow, 2024 Gilmore Artist, piano
Brian McCreath, host
We invite you to join us when Artistic and Executive Director Pierre van der Westhuizen welcomes 2024 Gilmore Artist Alexandre Kantorow, who will perform in recital, and engage in an on-stage conversation hosted by Brian McCreath, Director of Production for GBH Music, Boston, with Mr. van der Westhuizen, and Elizabeth Ostrow, chair of the Gilmore Artist Advisory Committee.
Born in France and of French-British heritage, Alexandre Kantorow has been hailed by critics as the ‘young tsar of the piano’ (Classica) and ‘Liszt reincarnated’ (Fanfare). In 2019, at age 22, he was the first French pianist to win the Gold Medal at the Tchaikovsky Competition as well as the Grand Prix, awarded only three times before in the competition’s history. Gramophone Magazine has described him as “the real deal, a fire-breathing virtuoso with a poetic charm and innate stylistic mastery.” Learn more about Mr. Kantorow here.
Kantorow’s award includes a $300,000 prize, and was juried anonymously after nominations from music professionals around the world were reviewed by an Artistic Advisory Committee.
Kantorow is the ninth Gilmore Artist named since 1991, and the first since 2018 Gilmore Artist Igor Levit. He joins an exclusive group that includes Rafal Blechacz (2014), Kirill Gerstein (2010), Ingrid Fliter (2006), Piotr Anderszewski (2002), Leif Ove Andsnes (1998), Ralf Gothóni (1994), and David Owen Norris (1991).
