June Book Club Discussion #1 - Every Note Played by Lisa Genova

Looking for something to do this summer? Want to join a community of readers who love music just as much as you do? Join The Gilmore Book Club – sign up today!

On Wednesday, June 16 at 7 PM ET, we will meet virtually to discuss Chapters 1-16 of Lisa Genova’s Every Note Played. Participants have been emailed a link to the Google Meet. Below you will find the questions we will be discussing at this time.

  1. Did you know that Lisa Genova’s original title for Every Note Played was Diminuendo? Do you think your reading of the book would have differed if the title had been different? In what ways does the title help or harm your interpretation of the book?

  1. While visiting Richard, Karina reflects on how “the story of their lives can be an entirely different genre depending on the narrator.” (p. 29)  How does switching narration between the two characters influence your perception of each of them?

  1. While Richard and Karina were both classically trained pianists, Karina’s true passion is playing jazz piano. How do their musical preferences reflect their personalities?

  1. Upon learning of Richard’s diagnosis, Karina pays him a visit. “She had such good intentions,” and wonders how it went “so wrong.” (p. 32) What are Karina’s motivations for visiting Richard? Do you think that her intentions are good?

  1. How would you react if you were given Richard’s prognosis? What things would be the most difficult to lose or stop doing?
