Flip Phones, Films, and F. Schubert: Learn More About Rising Star Daniela Liebman

May 6, 2025

Daniela Liebman Q and A

At just 21 years old, Mexican pianist Daniela Liebman has already made an impression on the international classical music scene. Known for her poise and nuance, Daniela’s journey began early—she made her orchestral debut at eight years old with the Aguascalientes Symphony. Since then, her talent has taken her around the world, performing with more than 30 orchestras across four continents.

We reached out to Daniela to learn more about her musical journey and the influences that shape her work.

Which artists are you listening to right now?

“Lately I’ve been listening to Mercedes Sosa. I don’t think there’s anything in the world that makes me feel as peaceful and nostalgic as the sound of her voice. Often times, when my schedule gets really busy with things that are centered around classical music, I have the intense urge to listen to other genres to balance out my ears (and soul).”

Outside of your program for this concert, are there any other pieces that you’re working on right now?

“I’m working on a slightly different program for my graduation jury which is a week before my recital. I have some Philip Glass etudes I’m working on and I’m also playing Rhapsody in Blue later this spring, so a lot of different sound worlds. I love switching styles so everything feels new all the time.”

Do you have a pre-performance routine?

“I haven’t in the past, but recently I’ve found myself asking for a long hug before I go out on stage. Something in the exchange of energy when I hug someone tightly reminds me of the feeling I get while sharing on stage and it almost feels like an emotional warm up. It’s a bit awkward to ask when I’m traveling alone and I spring that question on a stranger who happens to be there, but most of the time it’s gone over well!”

What’s the last memorable performance you attended by another musician?

“I went to a graduation recital that a longtime friend gave last week and spent the rest of the day reeling from how special it feels to hear someone you love play so beautifully. I grew up mostly being inspired by pianists I’d listen to online or in concert halls but more and more I find myself inspired by my colleagues and friends. There is something so moving about having a meaningful conversation with someone and then watching them pour their heart out on stage. It becomes less about the quality of the performance and more about just witnessing an extension of them without words.”

Is there something you enjoy when you are not practicing, playing, or traveling?

“I love watching films. If I weren’t pianist, I would dedicate my life to working in some part of the film industry, whether directing, acting, composing, or just bringing everyone their coffee. I think any proximity to that industry would give me a lot of joy. I’ve also recently started cooking though I’ve already noticed a large deficiency of talent in that area that I hope to overcome soon…”

What are you looking forward to in the next six months?

“I am graduating from Juilliard and will be on my own for the first time. I don’t think I have the proper words to describe how excited I am to sit with music alone for the first time in my life, outside of academia and really just as a life companion now. I think sometimes playing piano to prepare for some kind of competition, jury or lesson can cloud the part of myself that sees the piano simply as a friend to live alongside and share my life with.”

Is there a highlight of your year so far, either professional or personal?

“I got a flip phone in February and have transitioned to using it everyday instead of my iPhone. This has revolutionized my life already, but I’m trying to detransition from technology even more. I find myself infinitely more able to be present with music and people without anything electronic nearby, so I’m so excited to have gotten back hours and hours of my day. Next plan is to get my cd player fixed.”

Daniela is sure to captivate both on and off the stage. Don’t miss the chance to see The Gilmore’s final Rising Star of the season on Sunday, May 11, at the Wellspring Theater in the Epic Center.
