Celebrating a Life of Service: Wanda Pagel Herman’s Lasting Support for The Gilmore

November 13, 2024

Born on May 6, 1943, in Prague, Czechoslovakia, Wanda Pagel Herman led a life marked by resilience, passion, and a deep commitment to the arts. Her journey from an accomplished athlete and film student in Prague to a dedicated supporter of The Gilmore in Kalamazoo, Michigan, reflects a remarkable dedication to cultural enrichment.

In 1969, Wanda arrived in the United States to pursue her doctorate at Ohio University. Amid political upheaval in her homeland, she chose to remain in the U.S., completing her studies and eventually joining Western Michigan University’s Audio-Visual Department. It was there she met her future husband, Communication Professor Tom Pagel; they married in 1974.

Wanda’s involvement with The Gilmore was both personal and profound. She volunteered extensively, often transporting visiting artists and ushering at concerts. Together with Tom, she supported the Rising Stars Series, sponsoring recitals from 2017 to 2019. Her passion for education led her to engage with The Gilmore’s Piano Camp, where she initiated discussions about planned giving. Her eventual bequest was designated for education programming and the Rising Stars Series, ensuring her support would continue to nurture emerging talent.

Former Gilmore Assistant Director Alice Kemerling described Wanda as “the kindest person, very interested in people, culture, and connections.” Wanda’s thoughtful contributions have left an indelible mark on The Gilmore, embodying a legacy of service and dedication to the arts.

Through her involvement with the Encore Society, Wanda’s commitment to The Gilmore endures, inspiring future generations and ensuring the Festival’s mission continues to thrive.
