Our Gilmore Artists and Gilmore Young Artists have been busy — learn what they’ve been up to over the past year!

 

Gilmore Artists

2018 Gilmore Artist Igor Levit will release his latest album, On DSCH, on September 10, 2021 through the Sony Classical label. The album features Shostakovich’s 24 Preludes and Fugues, Op. 87 and Ronald Stevenson’s Passacaglia on DSCH.

2010 Gilmore Artist Kirill Gerstein is collaborating with the Kronberg Academy on a series of webinars titled “Kirill Gerstein Invites”. It features figures from the worlds of jazz and classical music, philosophy, and musicology discussing a range of musical topics. Tickets for the series can be purchased on the Kronberg Academy’s website.

2006 Gilmore Artist Ingrid Fliter sat on the jury for the first round of the 2021 Leeds International Piano Competition from March 28 – April 8, 2021. The first round took place virtually in 17 cities around the world. The second round, semi-finals, and finals will take place from September 8-18, 2021 in Leeds, England.

2002 Gilmore Artist Piotr Anderszewski released his album featuring selected preludes and fugues from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Well-tempered clavier, Book II on January 29, 2021 through Warner Classics. The recording was lauded by critics, including Gramophone who named it as one of their “Essential New Albums” in January.

1998 Gilmore Artist Leif Ove Andsnes released MM 1785 on the Sony Classical label in June 2021, his second project as the inaugural Artistic Partner of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. It is the first of two volumes featuring a remarkable series of masterpieces that Mozart composed in 1785 and 1786. Gramophone named it their Recording of the Month in June and Mr. Andsnes discussed it in a recent interview with the magazine after serving as their May 2021 cover artist.

1991 Gilmore Artist David Owen Norris collaborated on the recent album release, The Harmonious Echo: Songs by Sir Arthur Sullivan, with Soprano Mary Bevan, Mezzo-soprano Kitty Whately, Tenor Ben Johnson, and Bass-Baritone Ashley Riches, in May of 2021. This recording marks the second installment featuring the repertoire of Sir Arthur Sullivan.

 

Gilmore Young Artists

2020 Gilmore Young Artist Maxim Lando performed in Live from Carnegie Hall’s tribute to jazz pianist and Gilmore friend, Armando “Chick” Corea, who passed away on February 9, 2021 of cancer. The concert premiered on June 11, 2021. Lando performed previously with Corea during Carnegie Hall’s Opening Night in 2017. 

2018 Gilmore Young Artist Elliot Wuu received the Juilliard Kovner Fellowship and admission into The Juilliard School Bachelor of Music program. The prestigious fellowship grants free room and board to recipients and is only given to a small number of students who exhibit extraordinary talent and promise. 

2016 Gilmore Young Artist Micah McLaurin released an album of live performances in October of 2020, featuring his 2016 Gilmore Keyboard Festival performance of Lizst’s Funerailles S. 173. The album also features performances from Verbier Festival, La Società dei Concerti, and the Curtis Institute of Music.

2014 Gilmore Young Artist Llewellyn Sanchez-Werner and 2018 Gilmore Young Artist Elliot Wuu were both granted the 2021 Salon de Virtuosi Career Grant.

2012 Gilmore Young Artist George Li will perform Rachmaninoff’s “Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini” with the Pacific Symphony on September 11, 2021 to close their Summerfest ‘21 season. 

2010 Gilmore Young Artist Ivan Moshchuk released an album of Beethoven and Rachmaninoff’s piano sonatas in April of 2021.

2008 Gilmore Young Artist Adam Golka created a video series entitled “32@32” with filmmaker Zac Nicholson. The series dives into each of Ludwig van Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas with special guests such as Piano Master Richard Goode and the late Leon Fleisher and is available to watch on Youtube.

2008 Gilmore Young Artist Rachel Naomi Kudo performed Marc-Andre Hamelin’s Suite à l’ancienne (Suite in the old style) during The Gilmore’s 2020-2021 virtual season on February 21, 2021. The commission was completed using Kudo’s Gilmore Young Artist Award.

2002 Gilmore Young Artist Jonathan Biss released his audio-only memoir, UNQUIET: My Life with Beethoven on the Audible platform on December 17, 2020, Beethoven’s 250th birthday. The memoir includes selections of Biss performing Beethoven’s works as well as his own personal reflections on the interplay between the famous composer and Biss’ struggles with anxiety. 

2000 Gilmore Young Artist Andrew von Oeyen released an album entitled Bach — Beethoven on the Warner Classics label on June 11, 2021. The album features Bach’s eight-movement Overture in the French Style BWV 831, Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas No 13 in E flat and No 23 in F minor, ‘Appassionata’, and arrangements by Wilhelm Kempff of two movements that Bach wrote for accompanied flute. 

1996 Gilmore Young Artist Orli Shaham will serve on the jury for the 16th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Opening rounds of the competition will take place in June of 2022.
