The Gilmore is delighted to announce that Misha Galant and Maxim Lando have been named recipients of the Gilmore Young Artist Award for 2020. The two American pianists will each receive a $15,000 stipend to further their musical careers and educational development, as well as $10,000 towards the commissioning of a new piano composition for which the artist will have exclusive performance rights for one year. As is always the case with Gilmore artist awards, neither was aware he was under consideration and being reviewed along with many other candidates.

“In Misha Galant and Maxim Lando, we see the combination of talent and ambition so essential to the careers of all great artists, and which the Gilmore Young Artist Award was envisioned to support and nurture,” said Gilmore Director Pierre van der Westhuizen. “All of us at The Gilmore are delighted with their selection, and for me it was especially memorable to experience for the first time the joy of presenting an award that comes as a complete surprise to the recipient. We thank our friends at Steinway for the opportunity to introduce Misha and Maxim as Gilmore Young Artists this fall at Steinway Hall. It will be a pleasure to share their artistry and to watch their careers develop in the years ahead.”

Mr. Galant has won prizes at multiple important competitions, including both the 2015 Van Cliburn Junior Competition and Eastman Young Artists International Piano Competition. He currently attends Columbia University and The Juilliard School, where he is studying piano and pursuing degrees in Data Science and Russian Literature. Mr. Galant spends a considerable amount of his free time in volunteer work, performing for the elderly, underprivileged, and others with little access to live classical music.

Mr. Lando’s concerts and collaborations have brought him to the international stage quickly and decisively. At the age of 14 he performed with the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra in Saint Petersburg and in 2018 he won first prize at the 2018 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, thereby joining the prestigious roster of Young Concert Artists. Mr. Lando currently studies in the pre-college division of The Juilliard School.
