Six remarkable young pianists will appear in concert during the upcoming 2012-13 Rising Stars Series at the Epic Center’s Wellspring Theater in downtown Kalamazoo. Recitals are held on Sundays at 4 PM, and audience members are invited to meet the artist at an informal reception in The Gilmore offices following each concert.

Now in its second decade, The Gilmore’s Rising Stars Series has earned a reputation for presenting tomorrow’s stars of the classical music world. According to Gilmore Director Dan Gustin, the upcoming season represents one of the most gifted groups of young pianists yet.

Opening the season on September 9th is HJ Lim, a Korean-born pianist who recently released the complete Beethoven sonatas for the EMI label and now lives in Switzerland. Seventeen-year-old, Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki, who signed on with Deutsche Grammophon at just 15 and released his debut recording of Mozart Concertos earlier this year, will perform on September 23rd.

Hungarian pianist János Palojtay, who will be here on October 21st, was awarded second prize at the International Chopin Competition in Budapest and currently studies with 2010 Gilmore Artist Kirill Gerstein.

Winner of the 2011 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition, Kris Bowers, will perform a concert of jazz on January 13th.

Following his debut at the Gilmore Keyboard Festival this spring, our 2012 Gilmore Young Artist George Li returns to Kalamazoo on February 10.

Completing the season on March 3rd will be Minsoo Sohn, whose recording of Bach’s Goldberg Variations was named as one of the top classical recordings for 2011 by The New York Times.

Subscriptions to the six-concert series are on sale now for $125. Individual concert tickets are $25 and all student tickets are $5. There is no reserved seating. Tickets are available through The Gilmore and may be purchased in person at The Gilmore’s offices in the Epic Center, by phone at 269-342-1166 or online through The Gilmore’s website.
