Jazz pianist Emmet Cohen works with students through the YoungArts Foundation, creating curricula and visiting schools to give lectures and lessons to younger pianists.
“It’s important to keep them inspired,” Cohen says of working with kids. “Have them understand that playing music is fun – it’s not about practicing nine hours per day, slaving, and having a Russian teacher with a ruler.
“If you want to be a musician, it should be because you have a love for music and you couldn’t imagine doing anything else.”
Emmet Cohen performed as a soloist and with his trio live in Kalamazoo on October 16, 2016.
