Gilmore Piano Lab Music Therapist

The Gilmore Piano Lab Music Therapist will conduct meaningful sessions that instruct music as a leisure activity and use music as a tool for learning social behaviors and academics. The Gilmore Piano Lab Music Therapist will work closely with the administration and teachers at KRESA’s Young Adult Program in Kalamazoo. This position begins in the fall of 2019. Exact teaching hours are negotiable and dependent upon program registration and scheduling. Some evening events are required. Additional teaching assignments or opportunities may be offered.

Desired Qualifications

  • A degree in music therapy and board certification (MT-BC).
  • Degree in piano pedagogy or relative experience.
  • Experience working with students with a diverse range of disabilities.
  • Previous experience in leading and instructing groups.
  • Ability to create and maintain your own schedule.
  • Experience working with digital keyboards, Google products, Logic X, and Synthesia.
  • Basic recording technology experience.
  • Minimum commitment of September 2019 through June 2020.

Hours and Wages

  • 6-9 hours a week possible, not including prep time.
  • $33/hour for sessions; $11/hour for prep time.

Daily Duties

  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to conduct 4-6-week songwriting units.
  • Offer piano lab sessions to cultivate a love for music-making using non-traditional teaching techniques such as the Synthesia program.
  • Organize percussion circles for practicing social behaviors.
  • Collaborate closely with KRESA staff to create a regular class schedule.
  • Report attendance and lessons to the Director of Education on a regular basis.
