Conrad Tao (2012)

Chinese-American pianist Conrad Tao gave his first recital at age 4, and now at age 17 he will be releasing his first recording (on the EMI label) this fall, featuring solo piano works including three of his own compositions.

In addition to being named a 2012 Gilmore Young Artist, Tao was named a Presidential Scholar for the Arts in music. He is an eight-time consecutive winner, since 2004, of the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award.

Currently a student with Yoheved Kaplinsky at the Juilliard Pre-College Division, he studies composition with Christopher Theofanidis of Yale University. Also an accomplished violinist, Tao recently graduated from high school and entered the joint Columbia University/Juilliard College program in New York.

In June, PBS began broadcasting nationwide a Great Performances special, “Dream With Me” with Jackie Evancho, where Tao appears as guest soloist on both the violin and piano.
