Kirill Gerstein (2010)

Kirill Gerstein (2010)

2010 Gilmore Artist Kirill Gerstein is The Gilmore’s first “dual” winner, having also been named a Gilmore Young Artist in 2002. The 32-year-old Russian/American pianist was also the recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2010.

Highlights of his upcoming season include debuts with the New York Philharmonic and the Seattle Symphony; return appearances with San Francisco, Detroit and Atlanta Symphonies and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra; a three-week Rachmaninoff concerto cycle with the Houston Symphony; and recitals at New York’s 92nd St. Y, UC Berkley and London’s Wigmore Hall.

Gerstein’s first recording for Myrios Classics of recital works by Schumann, Liszt and Oliver Knussen was released in October 2010, closely followed by a recording of duets with Tabea Zimmermann.

The Russian-born Gerstein taught himself to play jazz by listening to his parents’ extensive record collection. At the age of 14, he moved to the United States to study jazz piano as the youngest student ever to attend Boston’s Berklee College of Music. While simultaneously studying classical repertoire, Gerstein eventually focused on classical music. He received his bachelor and master degrees from the Manhattan School of Music. In addition to a full performance schedule, Gerstein is a professor of piano at the Musikhochschule in Stuttgart, Germany.
