An internationally known composer and jazz pianist, Geri Allen embodies the duality of jazz–both the tradition and innovation. She gives credit to Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner and Cecil Taylor as her inspirations. Reviewing Allen’s sold-out week at New York’s Village Vanguard in January of this year, The New York Times described the artist as one of the most important jazz musicians of the last 25 years.
Born and raised in Detroit, Allen now divides her time between a busy performing and recording career in New York and teaching jazz and contemporary improvisation at the University of Michigan. About her latest CD, Downbeat magazine says Allen is “currently going through one of the most creative periods of her career.”
Joining Allen are Robert Hurst, bass, and Karriem Riggins, drums.
