The New York Times heralds the new generation of pianists who have “stunning” virtuosity and phenomenal technique. New York Times critic Anthony Tommasini writes, “Technical excellence is such a given that … artists can cultivate real personality, style and flair.”
Tommasini mentions several legendary pianists who have been Festival artists, such as Richard Goode, Mitsuko Uchida, Garrick Ohlsson and Lang Lang (who was in our Rising Stars Series). His article includes several of the Gilmore Artists and Gilmore Young Artists in his article, as well as the Gilmore Artist Award itself. He refers to Piotr Anderszewski as “an exceptional Bach interpreter”; Leif Ove Andsnes is “an artist [he] reveres” and who “plays with exquisite technique and vibrant musicality”; and he includes Jonathan Biss as “a sensitive, musically scrupulous player.”
