The 2011-2012 season marks David Lockington’s thirteenth season as music director of the Grand Rapids Symphony. Under his direction the Symphony has achieved new heights of artistic excellence and greater acclaim.
In 2005, Lockington led the orchestra before a full house in New York’s Carnegie Hall.Under Lockington, the Symphony has recorded five CDs and earned a Grammy® nomination in 2007. The Symphony has also reached out to new and diverse audiences through its annual community concert “Symphony with Soul,” now in its tenth season. Since September 2007 Lockington has also served as music director of the Modesto (CA) Symphony Orchestra.
Lockington began his career as principal cellist with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. After completing his bachelor’s degree at the University of Cambridge, he came to the U.S. on scholarship to Yale University, where he received his master’s degree in cello performance.
